Abstract
This study presents a literature review analyzing research methods and paper contents on the language of exceptional children as published in various research journals in the field of special education such as ?Korean Journal of Communication Disorders?, ?Journal of Speech & Hearing Disorders? and ?Journal of Special Education?. The purposes of the study were to determine recent trends of language research for exceptional children and to identify areas for future research. For these purposes, 172 papers on language for exceptional children were chosen and sub-categories for research methods and contents were also analyzed. The sub-categories for research methods include types of disability, research types and instrument. The sub-categories for contents include independent variables and dependent variables. The study results showed that research articles for children with hearing disorders and experimental studies were most common concerning types of disability and type of research, respectively. Regarding the type of research content, subject to subject(1:1) drill was used most frequently for independent variables while expressive language was more frequently used than receptive language for dependent variables. Based on these results, the overall trends regarding research methods and contents for Korean exceptional children were discussed and some suggestions were provided.
